Case study: Trayt Health supports integrated mental health care in schools across Texas

Quick facts:

  • TCHATT is an access-to-care program that provides targeted telehealth services in schools, and pairs individuals and families with community-based providers when appropriate. The two components create a comprehensive system of care for each student served.
  • The Trayt for Schools portal integrates mental health resources into school settings throughout Texas. The Trayt platform facilitates school-based behavioral health services, and it improves care by providing the care team with deeper, measurement-based insights.

As part of a legislative push to expand mental health services in Texas, the state introduced the Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) program in 2020 to provide in-school behavioral telehealth care to children and adolescents. Psychiatrists and behavioral health specialists from 12 of the state’s health-related institutions connect with students for individual telehealth sessions at school. Care is also coordinated as needed with referrals to local providers.

TCHATT is funded by the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC), which selected Trayt as their centralized data platform to manage patient information across TCHATT. Trayt helps TCHATT leverage technology solutions to facilitate collaborative care, track diagnosis and treatment, and automate reporting on performance and progress.

Technology to create an ecosystem of care

Trayt for Schools manages TCHATT’scare workflows, giving school staff a secure, easy-to-access, web-based portal where they can easily refer students into the program. Trayt’s multifactorial data platform helps behavioral health specialists implement measurement-based care (MBC) through digitally delivered standardized measures (such as the GAD-7 or PHQ-9) tracked over time, as well as through the patient-facing app where students and caregivers report between-session symptoms and feelings throughout treatment. This 360° view of the student allows the entire care team to monitor each student’s progress to make collaborative and data-informed decisions on care.

Statewide program insights and analytics are available in near real-time, giving leadership the ability to monitor, adjust, and enhance care access. TCHATT data in Trayt also enables program leaders to share program successes and opportunities with key stakeholders and state legislators. For participating clinicians, this additional information is invaluable and helps to directly inform care pathways: Clinical treatment recommendations, medication management, follow-ups, and additional referrals are all captured within the Trayt for Schools portal.
